The Appearance of a Promise

Why are wedding rings and engagement rings so popular? Other than the DeBeers campaign, they symbolize promises shared. The concept of vows is comforting because it provides the idea of stability. Sadly, when circumstances make stability impossible, it is difficult to conceive of the power of a promise.

All throughout México, these iron rods protrude from roofs. While seemingly unattractive, they symbolize families working to stay together. Like everywhere else, the price of housing has increased, and people have been forced to reimagine how a future looks. To remind themselves of the promise to remain together, these iron rods are added.

Can families predict “markets” and labor costs? Can families predict climate change? Of course not, but the appearance of a promise is enticing. So many politicians make fake promises, but people force themselves to believe that they can outrun external factors. Without the idea of stability, there is very little hope, and generally, without hope, desperation consumes everything.
