How Far Would You Go?

There are so many people looking for jobs at this point in time, and with the rise of technology, the cruelty of rejection has become even more harsh while the stakes are rising. High costs of living regardless of location mean that people are ever more desperate to earn some money, and desperation leads to deprivation, especially of wages. Employers and business owners feel entitled to force everyone to accept less than what they themselves charge to exist. At this point in time, there is a question for all the so-called “job creators” all over the internet: how far would you go?

Would you post a job for a long period of time while complaining about the lack of applicants? Would you demand that people apply using a malfunctioning system while turning away people who email or apply in person? Would you review applications with artificial intelligence without confirming that biases have been accounted for and mitigated? Technology can be helpful, but nobody should underestimate the racism and misogyny in the tech industry, because the creators are creating the demographics as well as the algorithms.

Would you set up multiple interviews that take place long after the application has been completed? Would you demand that people show up in person to complete multiple tasks to “test their knowledge” without offering any compensation or affirmation of their opportunity? Would you provide salary information so that people can make informed choices for their own lives, demonstrating a willingness to collaborate? So many people are abusing their power by literally taking too long to make decisions while demanding that people trust their processes. Such absent-minded decision making increases tent cities.

It is no longer cute. People are expected to work to provide for themselves and be responsible, but employers and business owners are not required to make responsible decisions. There is no value in continuing to demand that people play by one-sided rules under which too few people win. Everyone is exhausted, but the same people keep offering the same excuses, and too many of the populace are listening. Maybe instead of offering excuses for why everyone is losing resources and draining their mental health, employers and businesses should stop looking for ways to extract without offering anything in return.
