For years, I struggled to appease the dominant narrative. As a Black femme, there are actually two narratives for me to appease, one being the premise of the “American dream” while the other was “Black excellence.” I went to Yale while working multiple jobs, got a masters from the University of Leeds while working full time, and participated as an endurance athlete in marathons and triathlons. It was only after sitting on top of a mesa on my 37th birthday with someone relentlessly criticizing me for no apparent reason that I finally realized that I was no longer responsible for the insecurities of others.
The most frustrating element of capitalism and neoliberalism is that neither has any place for integrity or morals. Economics now ranks among other disgraced social sciences, such as phrenology and eugenics, because it only serves to justify oppression and destruction. I learned that deforestation was just as big a business as narcotics, despite developers and their minions continuing to bleat that the only way to reduce the cost of living was continuing to build. So many people have the same ideas, yet continue to brag about being “elite.” I would be embarrassed to keep offering the same dysfunctional solutions while simultaneously calling myself “elite.”
This site is less about hoping to appeal to the masses–because attention is such a precious and expensive commodity–and more about helping rewrite history and assist in changing how people view themselves or others. I am neither the first nor the last person to cringe about having said the phrase “American exceptionalism” unironically, but I will do my best to help deprogram others. It is the top priority of human beings to deindustrialize thoughts. Smaller is healthier and less stressful, so “growth” is inherently immoral at this point in time.
