Aim for Boredom

This morning, I got up at a regular time, made breakfast, ran an errand, and prepared for a tutoring session for a new student. Nothing was extraordinary, and all of these actions were basic steps that I had taken before. For the first time in months, I was bored–and I loved it, because rather than obsess about the future or lament about the past, I was truly in the moment.

Instead of chasing excitement, this is what most imperial residents crave: boredom. We long to have stretches of time where we do nothing except think about what we want to do, and when. Control over our own time is the ultimate goal, and this is the main reason that elites want to take it from us. To them, free time means looking for new methods of torture and humiliation for people they consider beneath them; other people aim for boredom so that their lives are less stressful.
